Pingtung County Library

Spanning nearly 5 hectares, this is Taiwan's only "forest-style library." During its architectural design phase, building footprints were intentionally scaled back to preserve a lush grove of 50-year-old camphor trees. Complemented by newly planted flamboyant trees, rosy trumpet trees, and chinaberry trees, the design seamlessly weaves dancing tree shadows from the inside out, offering changing natural landscapes across the seasons. This shaded sanctuary is a favorite spot for squirrels, birds, and readers alike. From the spacious outdoor balconies on the 2nd and 3rd floors, visitors can take in the cascading shades of green formed by the immediate tree canopy and the distant Dawu Mountain.

This landmark architecture holds the collective memories of Pingtung residents. Striking a delicate balance between preserving historical identity and enhancing modern functionality truly put design ingenuity to the test. While retaining its original spatial layout as much as possible, the library expanded its collection capacity from 130,000 to 40,000 volumes. The children's reading area has more than doubled in size, and seating has increased from 150 to 500 seats. Additionally, the 5th-floor auditorium maintains its 200-seat capacity, and the 4th-floor Pingtung Literature Area still proudly treasures a 35-year-old traditional slate house—ensuring that the traces of the past are never forgotten
