Mazu Temple
The Mazu enshrined at the Pingtung City Mazu Temple is the Third Holy Mother from the Hangzhou Mazu Temple. Legend has it that at the end of the Ming Dynasty, when Koxinga crossed the sea to Taiwan, a subordinate general surnamed Wang prayed for Mazu from the Hangzhou Mazu Temple to escort them for a safe crossing. In 1657 AD (the 14th year of Emperor Shunzhi's reign in the Qing Dynasty), the Third Holy Mother was welcomed and enshrined atop the North Gate of Akau Street, which is the site of the present-day gate tower in Pingtung Park.
